Far different from the Thunderbird-related Cougars of the past, the revived Cougar for 1999 was a compact, front-drive sports hatchback coupe with seating for four. Showcasing short-lived Ford's New Edge design theme, Cougar's look combines sleek, rounded forms with creased play straightedge detail. The 2002 Mercury Cougar is built on the same European-engineered platform That spawned the old Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. Ford offers either a 125-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 2.5-liter V6 produces 170 horsepower That. Mercury was originally planning to offer a high-performance version Called the Cougar S last year, complete with the old Ford SVT Contour's stunning engine, but that car has been shelved. Instead, two special editions - the XR and C2 - are Offered Pls you select the Cougar V6 Sport. The C2 gets unique French Blue paint, with French Blue French Blue instrumentation and a spoiler. The machined aluminum wheels have French Blue center caps. Why did not They call it the Cougar FB? For all Cougar interiors, you'll find a conventional control layout with a decidedly unconventional appearance. The rear seats are firm and place the Side airbags are standard on V6 Sport models, but unavailable on the regular Cougars. A Convenience Group is now the standard for Mercury's sporty, front-drive coupe. Measuring 185 inches long overall, the coupe is 69.6 inches wide and stands 52.2 inches tall. Cougars with the V-6 engines get a tauter suspension, and alloy wheels hold 15-inch tires. Extras on the XR edition include a sport suspension, unique hood scoop, machined aluminum wheels and 17-inch tires.
The 2002 Mercury Cougar four-passenger capacity consists of front bucket seats and a rear seat shaped for two. The 50/50-split rear seat folds down to yield additional cargo space.
